Miles That Matter
Overview:
Behind every great athlete are a few driving forces that made it all possible. The show features three different basketballers Azzi Fudd, Trey McKenney, and Napheesa Collier. Each episode offers an intimate look at the athlete's life beyond the arena as they navigate their hometowns alongside the family and coaches who helped shape them, from school gyms in Flint and Arlington to the farm roads of Missouri. We aimed to capture some of that essence into grounded, natural but intentional graphics
Main Title:
Designing a show’s main title is always a rewarding journey, every detail can help capture its emotional core. At the center is the final title we landed on, letterforms scroll upward subtly echoing an odometer as the miles accumulate. A hint at mirroring the athlete’s growth through time. Light and dust shimmer softly, like light filtering through a car window in motion. The result is a resonant nod to the sentimental themes of the show.
Bespoke Archival:
With the documentary moving fluidly between past and present, select poignant moments of archival were intentionally paired with the opposing timeline within a single frame. For example, imagery of Trey as a professional athlete is layered over the high school gym where he once trained at, grounding his success in the very place where it all began. Together, these layered moments establish a visual language that supports the show's themes while maintaining an authentic textural element that can be seen and felt.
Scene Setting:
Given the unique nature of Miles That Matter having an interview space which constantly evolves as the interviewees are picked up as well as the locations they visit being an integral part of their story, we pitched the idea of a framing device designed for multi-shot sequences. This approach helped create a cohesive structure for introducing new environments and characters, unifying the atmospheric elements across the scene.
